Tapper is a music teaching tool for players of The Chapman Stick. However, it can also be useful for guitar and bass players as well.

The user will select a tuning, a key, and either a chord or scale. Tapper will show the user a series of fingerings for that chord or scale. For each of these fingerings Tapper will play the chord voicing or scale via MIDI.

Tapper will also have an ear training section where the user can select a key and a scale. Tapper will play a short random phrase using that scale in that key. The player must try to duplicate that phrase.

It is our intention that Tapper will both send and receive MIDI signals. This will allow Tapper to:

  1. Play music via MIDI to the sound card or to an external synthsizer.
  2. "Listen" to what the user is playing and give appropriate
    help and guidence.

Tapper is currently under development as an open source project. A prototype was built several years ago in C++ for the Windows Operating System. This new version of Tapper will be written in the Java language. Because it is written in Java Tapper will run on a Windows computer, a Linux computer, a Sun Solaris computer, or any other computer hardware and operating system that supports Java.

Being an open source project means this program and it's source code is now and will always be free. It also means that your assitence in building this product is not only welcome, but encouraged. You have the oppurtunity to make this program yours. If you want it to have a particular feature then it's up to you to help build that feature. When's the last time you've had that much power in deciding how a program should work?

I want to help! How do I get Started?

  1. Subscribe to the Tapper Mailing List. This will keep you updated to the latest news and developments.

  2. Go to the Tools Page and get all the free Java tools that you'll need in order to become a developer.

  3. Go to the Source Code Page and download the source code.

  4. Go to the README File Page and learn how to compile and run Tapper.

  5. Go to the Task Page and find a task that needs to be done and that you find interesting. Even if you're not a programmer you should take a look at this page.

  6. E-Mail me to let me know what you're working on so I can officially assign you the task.

  7. E-mail me your code with the new feature or bug fix. After you submit your first code I'll add you to the official developer's list. Once you're an official developer you'll have access to the CVS code tree so you can check files in and out as you need them.

That's it! Start with step #1 and get ready to write some code.
